When should I seek medical if I’m feeling nauseas?
You should seek medical care for nausea or vomiting if the symptoms last more than 24 hours, or more than 12 hours in children. It’s especially important to get help if you’re unable to keep any fluids down, as this can quickly lead to dehydration. Signs of dehydration—such as dry mouth, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or infrequent urination—should not be ignored. You should also contact a healthcare provider if your vomit contains blood or looks like coffee grounds, as this may indicate internal bleeding. Additional red flags include a severe headache, stiff neck, high fever, chest pain, abdominal pain, or confusion. If you’re pregnant, have diabetes, or have a weakened immune system and your symptoms persist, medical evaluation is recommended. When in doubt, it’s always safer to check in with a provider.
What causes nausea and vomiting?
Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a wide range of conditions, including viral infections like gastroenteritis (often referred to as the stomach flu), food poisoning, migraines, pregnancy, side effects from certain medications, heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke, and various other infections or underlying medical issues.
